Distributive Property

We worked today on the distributive property. While it is my favorite property, it is challenging. If your child is feeling like he/she does not understand this property, here are some resources you can use.

I hope this helps. Also, let your child know that today was the first day of distributive property. We will do a lot more practice!!!

Properties of Multiplication Definitions

Multiplication Properties There are four properties involving multiplication that will help make problems easier to solve. They are the commutative, associative, multiplicative identity and distributive properties. Commutative property: When two numbers are multiplied together, the product is the same regardless of the order of the multiplicands. For example 4 * 2 = 2 * 4 Associative Property: When three or more numbers are multiplied, the product is the same regardless of the grouping of the factors. For example (2 * 3) * 4 = 2 * (3 * 4) Multiplicative Identity Property: The product of any number and one is that number. For example 5 * 1 = 5. Distributive property: The sum of two numbers times a third number is equal to the sum of each addend times the third number. For example 4 * (6 + 3) = 4*6 + 4*3

Properties of Multiplication

This week we are focusing on the communtative and associative properties of multiplication. Next week we will learn about the distributive property. Please study the definitions of these properties with your child. We will have a test over them on Friday, October 11th.

Multiplication Facts

We are well on our way to understanding multiplication. We will have a two's multiplication test on Friday. It will not be timed or graded. Right now I just want the students to understand how to solve a multiplication sentence. We will work on speed as we get further into the school year. This is the order in which we will learn our facts: 2,5,10,4,3,6,7,8, and 9. Please practice facts at home.

Georgia Habitats

We are finishing up our unit on Georgia Habitats. Next week we will review all the habitats and create a flip book. This flip book will serve as the planning sheet for your child's informational essay on Georgia habitats. Your child will bring home a study guide on Monday. We will have a habitat test on Friday of next week. We have enjoyed learning about the swamps, marshes, mountains, coastal habitats, and Piedmonts. If you have a chance, visit one of our barrier islands or the Okefenokee Swamp.

Math

We are working on addition and subtraction up to 1,000. The students will be required to demonstrate what "carrying and borrowing" from a number means. If you are looking for a great online math program, khanacademy.org has some super videos that correlate with our standards.

Science

In science, we have finished our unit about magnets. Our new unit is Georgia Habitats. We will be learning about the mountains, piedmont, mashes, swamp, and oceans. Our vocabulary words for this unit are: barrier island, coast, continental shelf, dune, ecosystem, elevation, environment, estuary, habitat, marsh, organism, piedmont, reef, sandbar, swamp, wetland. If you have a chance point out some of the vocabulary that we find in our local habitats. Some examples are: sandbar, swamp, wetland, dune, and marsh.

This week we will be finishing up our unit on Magnets. The vocabulary terms that your child needs to know are as follows: permanent magnet, temporary magnet, magnetic poles, magnetic field, compass, repel, and attract. We have completed several experiments and have learned that magnets will attract to some metals but not all metals. Do you know two metals that a magnet will attract?
