Area

Last week and this week, we have been working on finding the area of a shape. A common mistake I have noticed is that the kids want to add up the sides instead of multiplying them. Remind students that area is found by multiplying the length and width. This week we are going be working on finding the area of rectilinear shapes. Here is a link to video that describes how to find the area of these shapes. http://learnzillion.com/lessons/3908-find-area-using-a-number-sentence

Last weeks timed facts test went well! It covered the zeros, ones, and twos. This week the timed test will cover zeros, ones, twos, fives, and tens. These are all fairly easy facts for students to memorize. So, be sure to work on those fours! We will include them the following week. After that, we will add the nines. After the nines, we will continue with the threes, sixes, sevens, and eights. Please help your child be successful in math! MEMORIZE THOSE FACTS!

Happy New Year

Welcome back! We hope everyone had a fantastic break. We are ready to get back in the swing of things here at JME. In case you haven't heard, we have a new principal. Her name is Rebecca Mock, and we are excited to see what she brings to JME!

Due to the short week, we will not have any spelling words. Your child will have reading and math homework on Wednesday and Thursday night.

We will begin taking timed multiplication tests this week. They will be for a grade. At this point, your child should be fluent with his/her zeros, ones, twos, fives, tens, and fours. Fluent means that they can quickly give you the answer (within 2-5 seconds). If your child is not fluent, please practice at home.

We are proud of all the students that made it to the AR party. You all worked hard! Keep reading every night!

In science we are working on heat. We are learning different ways heat is produced, transferred, measured, and how insulation helps reduce the transfer of heat energy.

The focus of social studies is on economics. The students will learn how economics play a part in our society.

In writing we, we are focusing on opinion and persuasive writing. We are proud of the writing we see taking place. Keep up the good work!
